17 Jun The importance of preventative care
We have all heard the phrase ‘prevention is better than a cure’. Preventative care refers to those actions we can take to actively protect our pets from health conditions, which are, you guessed it, preventable!
We want your pets to be completely protected from these diseases and conditions, so they don’t suffer unnecessarily. This is why we designed The Wolfe Pack Health Plan, to reward pet owners with heavy discounts and cost savings, to enable them to do this. We have some exciting changes launching very soon, where our standard plan is receiving an upgrade with additional benefits, and we are also offering 2 additional tiers of cover – find out more here on June 1st 2025.
Some preventative healthcare is a ‘one-off’ treatment, such as neutering; however, the vast majority is ongoing and forms part of your pet’s daily wellbeing, much like we may brush our teeth to prevent dental decay and attend regular check-ups which can help detect potential issues early on before they become serious (and potentially more expensive) problems.
Each pet has individual needs, so we don’t offer a one-size-fits-all approach. These are the main aspects of preventative healthcare, providing tailored care for your pet at each life stage.
Regular health checks
Dogs and cats age faster than humans. Regular check-ups can provide early detection of illnesses, which means we can cure them or provide treatment to effectively manage them before they cause permanent or more serious damage. It also allows us to discuss your pet’s diet or check their weight, for example, and discuss any concerns you may have, as after all, you know your pet best. We recommend check-ups twice a year as our pets’ needs change, just as ours do when we age. These check-ups ensure that we support our pets as best as we can to improve their overall wellbeing – after all, their time with us is too short.
Vaccinations
Vaccinations don’t just protect our pets. They also protect the wider community, stopping the spread of disease. They are effective, safe and the kindest way to offer protection. You can read the details of our vaccination strategies here. After their initial vaccinations, your pet will require regular booster vaccinations, which essentially top up their immunity after their initial protection.
Parasite control
Offering your pet parasite protection isn’t just to protect them from discomfort and disease; it also protects us as humans. Pets are provided with tailored parasite protection based on their lifestyle and unique circumstances, which is risk assessed and covers both endo (internal, such as roundworm) and ecto (external, such as fleas or ticks) parasites.
Neutering (spaying or castrating)
We recommend neutering (surgical sterilisation) of pets (who you do not intend to breed from responsibly) as unsterilised animals are at a higher risk of developing common cancers and infections. Of course, this is a personal choice and we are happy to discuss the options with you, including the alternatives; however, they do not possess the same benefits, i.e. in some cases, eradicating the risk of infections and diseases. In addition, for female dogs, we also offer the option to spay your pet laparoscopically (keyhole surgery), where we use specialist equipment to perform the procedure less invasively, offering benefits such as reduced pain, faster recovery, quicker return to exercise and fewer potential complications.
Whilst these are the main cornerstones of preventative healthcare, this list is not exhaustive. The Wolfe Pack also includes aspects such as:
– Nail trimming
-Anal gland expression
-Ear cleaning
-Discounts on dentistry
To provide comprehensive protection.
If you would like to join thousands of other pet owners in gaining peace of mind as well as making pet ownership more convenient and cost-effective, visit our Wolfe Pack Health Plan page and conveniently sign up for the package most appropriate for you and your pet. Remember, preventative healthcare or membership to a health plan is not pet insurance. We will be covering the differences between the two in a later blog, but a health plan most certainly provides reassurance that all your pet’s routine care is covered in the most cost-effective way possible.
